But since the release of the Dext last year the manufacturer appears to be on the up and up. The Milestone XT720, the second phone in the Milestone range, is powered by Android 2.1 and looks to be another success.<br /><br />Style and handling on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />The Motorola Milestone XT720 is a chunky, heavy handset that weighs a hefty 160 grams. The 3.7-inch screen is great but set in a wide border; we can't help thinking that either the screen could have been bigger or the phone smaller. Like many touch-screens it's a fingerprint magnet, but it does seem worse than usual. Below the screen sit four touch keys for menu, home, back and quick search.<br /><br />The back of the phone is navy blue, which sounds odd but actually looks great against the metallic front. This is where you'll find the XT720's killer app: its eight-megapixel camera with Xenon flash. More on the camera later, but the flash and (unprotected) lens are on a slight ridge that makes the phone even fatter. It needs the bulk to accommodate that flash, of course, but some users may be put off by it.<br /><br />Touch-screen on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />The Motorola Milestone XT720 is a capacitive screen, which is better than the resistive kind, although in this case the screen is almost too responsive. We kept accidently hitting an icon twice, or brushing past one and launching up an app we hadn't wanted to.<br /><br />Whereas the original Milestone had a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the XT720 relies on an on-screen virtual one, with a haptic response so you know your key press has been recognised. It works in both portrait and landscape view - the latter is larger, obviously - although the accelerometer takes a few moments to register when you change from one to the other.<br /><br />A new feature Google is introducing is a Voice Input key, located on the keyboard next to the space bar. This enables you to dictate your messages instead of typing them and it works well, except for unusual names. And dictating email addresses takes far longer than simply typing them into the address bar.<br /><br />Shortcuts and widgets on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />The Milestone XT720 has five home screens, all of which are customisable. The main screen can be reached from anywhere simply by pressing the home key below the screen.<br /><br />No social networking apps have been preloaded, which seems odd, so you have the option to go via the browser or download the apps from Android Market. It's free to download both Twitter and Facebook and a far easier option than using the browser.<br /><br />YouTube is preloaded on the phone, though, and if you drag it to a home screen it will update regularly with recommended videos. Playback quality is variable: clips take a few seconds to load and if you don't play them in high quality are grainy and small. But select the HQ button and everything changes: the videos are larger and the quality very good indeed.<br /><br />We're always pleased to see a 3.5mm audio port for plugging in your headphones, and the speaker is also pretty good, and loud enough to bother fellow passengers on public transport.<br /><br />Internet on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />Internet is a speedy business on the XT720. If your network is up to it, you will get HSDPA data speeds of up to 1.2Mbps, and there's also Wi-Fi.<br /><br />Thanks to the Android 2.1 OS you also have multi-touch, the pinch-and-pull method of zooming pioneered by Apple. Having experienced this on other Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S, where it was slick and intuitive, we expected great things from it here. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, as text and pictures take a couple of seconds to change size.<br /><br />Processor on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />This is not the only slow thing about the Milestone XT720. The ARM Cortex A8 720MHz processor is fast, but doesn't come anywhere near the speeds achieved by the Galaxy S, HTC Desire or iPhone 4.<br /><br />Even that eight-megapixel camera is slow to launch, with a delay of about four seconds between pushing the perfectly positioned dedicated camera launch key and the camera firing up, by which time that spontaneous shot you wanted to capture will be well gone. There's also a delay when you actually take the photo, so don't move as soon as you've pressed the button.<br /><br />Camera on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />But despite the delays, the camera on the Milestone gives great results for but still and video photography. Quite apart from the eight-megapixel resolution, the Xenon flash makes all the difference. Even the pictures that we took in complete dark came out clear and detailed. A plethora of settings are on board to help you along including multi shot, face detection, red-eye reduction and camera shake prevention. Even the most amateurish of snappers can get good-quality pics from it.<br /><br />Video is also superb, enabling you to shoot over four and a half hours of high-definition footage in on go. Perfect for budding filmmakers. You also get a HDMI cable boxed in, which means you can watch your footage back over HDTV, and a button next to the camera key gives you access to your gallery.<br /><br />Sat nav on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />For navigation you have Motonav, Motorola's proprietary mapping service. It gave us a quick and accurate location fix, and the 3D maps and clear voice instructions make everything clear and easy to understand. Sometimes our positioned jumped instead of moving smoothly, but other than that it worked well, and plenty of users are likely to take up the paid service once the free trial has expired. If no, Google Maps provides a reliable and familiar alternative.<br />The verdict on the Motorola Milestone XT720<br />The Motorola Milestone XT720 is great in theory, ticking all the boxes for a good and reliable all rounder. However, it is big and heavy with a processor that can't handle the feature set, meaning you are prone to delays. It's a good device with a fantastic camera - it just may not compete against similarly priced, and better, competitors.

Okay, it is not as classy as the Moto Milestone or Samsung Galaxy S, but that's because it is encased in plastic to offer a shock-, dust- and water-resistance that they don't. It's reminiscent of a zebra, with a white edge strip and rubberised matte-black front, which should mean it stands out if you drop it when you're in the great outdoors. <br /><br />First impressions<br /><br />Generally, ruggedised phones put their all into being indestructible, sacrificing looks, a decent display, a good snapper and a nifty set of features in the process. The Defy tries to do both - okay it's not as highly protected as the Sonim Solid Extreme for instance, and it doesn't have top-of-the-range features, but they are better than those found on most tough handsets. Tough and smart is quite something to achieve in the mobile phone world.<br /><br />The Defy manages to stay pocket-sized, although it has a bit more girth than your average Android phone. The designers have tried to disguise this a little by sloping its sides, and while it can't claim to be as svelte as the iPhone 4, it is far shorter, even though it has a 3.8in display. You won't be surprised to hear that all edges are sealed - on the volume rocker and power switch and the pop-out plugs for the 3.5mm headphone jack and micro USB charger. The battery sits behind a sliding lock cover, which has small edge screws along its sides, to add to the feel of industrial chic. The huge display takes over the front of the device, apart from the four Android buttons that sit in touch-sensitive lights underneath it. It's the best-looking Motorola handset we've seen for some time.<br /><br />The display looks pretty decent. It's multi-touch and, while it's not up there with the AMOLED screens (colours can look a bit pale), it has an excellent resolution of 480x854 pixels. To add to its tough credentials, the display is made from Gorilla Glass, which should keep bumps and scratches at bay.<br />Back to basics<br /><br />So that's enough about the Defy's looks. What about its performance? As we're sure you're aware, capacitive displays work by conducting the electricity from your finger to the screen, so if the display is wet, it won't operate so well. iPhone fans may well already have discovered this.<br /><br />That aside, the Defy survived our clumsiness well - we dropped it on the floor a few times and even let it slip into a puddle. Once we'd wiped it down, the Defy carried on working and looked as good as new.<br /><br />Media and social networking<br /><br />The Defy boasts an impressive (for a tough device) 5 megapixel camera, complete with LED flash, and though it performed okay, it was disappointing in low light. We were happy with video recording, although there is no HD offering. But hey, you can't have it all.<br /><br />The version of Android the Defy supports is 2.1 - not the latest incarnation, so you might miss a few of the fancy additions. However, it does have the benefit of MotoBlur, a very decent social network aggregator, which gathers together your Facebook updates, messages and tweets and places items in widgets on the screen. Rivals have taken over MotoBlur recently, but it still remains a fun-to-use interface.<br /><br />There are seven screens, all of which have plenty to do. One has an icon for recent messages as well as contact shortcuts, while another features a media playback widget, as well as a help shortcut should you need any aid actually using the handset. Then there are Favourites, Contacts, Camera and several other buttons - all sitting at the bottom of each screen. Mind you, you can always dump them if you don't want them there. And we did like the useful bar of switches, to turn on and off flight mode, GPS and Wi-Fi should you wish to. <br /><br />The verdict<br /><br />While the Defy may not have a speedy 1GHz processor onboard, its 800MHz model seems to run pretty quickly. The battery life compares well with most of the other big-name Android devices, and will easily get you through the day on a full charge. Anyone who's a tad clumsy and has lost a smartphone in a pint of beer, or, even worse, down the toilet, might like to consider this tougher device, which combines ruggedisation and some fancy features. Motorola often manages to surprise us - and after bringing out a number of somewhat disappointing devices, by producing a handset with brains and brawn, it has done just that with the Defy.<br /><br />

Do you find it frustrating that you have to cart all of them about - or indeed that you have stuff on your handset that you really want on your computer? It's a common complaint of technology users, and Motorola has tried to address it by releasing a smartphone that can be converted into something that seems like a computer - think a Transformers-style transformation! The Atrix offers plenty of power with its dual-core chip, plus a separately available set of accessories, to turn it into a laptop or media centre.  <br /><br />First impressions<br />On first glance, the Atrix looks just like another handset - it has a black plastic body, rounded edges, a 4in touch-screen, and the specs you'd expect from a superphone - dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1GB RAM and a five-megapixel snapper with HD recording. On the front is a small VGA lens for making video calls, while on the left side is a HDMI port so you can view your content on a TV screen, plus microUSB for file transfer and charging. It's reasonably easy to hold - it measures 117.8x63.5x 11mm - and is just off being heavy, weighing in at 135g.<br /><br />We must give a special mention to the power button, which sits on the back cover and also acts as a fingerprint sensor - great if you're concerned about the security of your phone - and you can use this to biometrically unlock your handset. It works well and also unlocks the phone quicker than any other method we've seen. There's the added security level of a back up PIN.<br /><br />Motorola hasn't wasted lots of time on design - apart from the houndstooth-check pattern on the reverse; the Atrix is purely functional design-wise. What is most important is its ability to do all kinds of stuff - if you have the relevant accessories, that is.<br /><br />The Atrix runs Android Gingerbread, although Motorola has pimped it up with its own Motorblur skin, which makes the device very streamlined. Wallpaper and icons all look pretty sharp on the 540x960 screen, and the widgets remind us of those on Windows Phone 7, with their clean straight lines. It is possible to increase the size of the widgets (not possible on other Android handsets) so you can see more information. However, even though the touch screen is really responsive, it's quite a clunky process. Once achieved, the widgets look good and lack the pixelation we experienced with the first few Motoblur devices.<br /><br />Back to basics<br />Switch on the phone for the first time and you'll be asked to add your Facebook, email and Twitter details. They will be automatically synced with your phone contacts - it's frustrating that you can't choose to view only the contacts that have phone numbers though. This means you end up with a vast list of contacts - many of which only have email addresses.<br /><br />Happily, using the text and dialler apps you can simply type the name of your chosen contact and the number details are automatically filled in, so you don't need to worry about it too much.<br /><br />The Atrix has a number of widgets preloaded, which is great for first-time smartphone owners. You can see the latest developments on your Facebook and Twitter accounts in either a single or two separate boxes using the social networking widgets, plus you can add a widget that will show what you last wrote - tap on it to share more.<br /><br />The Motorola Phone Portal allows you to manage and back up photos, messages, contacts and other phone details such as missed calls - this can be accessed via Wi-Fi or USB.<br /><br />So, these are all pretty standard functions, so let's get onto its USP - the accessories (which are sold in a separate set). Using many of the accessories resulted in a number of software freezes, which saw pop-up windows refuse to shut down and the touch-display failing to respond. We either had to turn off the display - or shut down the whole device - to get it working again.<br /><br />Laptop or not?<br />The Atrix can be plugged into a number of accessories but the most intriguing is the Lapdock - this is a Moto product that is actually a plastic replica of a real laptop - it has a battery and HDMI and microUSB plugs that fit into the handset. Attach it and you pretty much have a laptop at your disposal. Once done, the Webtop app automatically fires up on the handset and shows the dock's screen. This appears as a basic browser, with shortcuts for contacts book, dialler, messaging inbox (for social network and email messages) and the entertainment centre.<br /><br />It is also possible to browse files on the device, but you'll find the file manager is actually an unadulterated list of all the files on the handsets.  Lots of these either can't - or shouldn't be - used, which will be disconcerting to anyone not used to poking around into the depths of their virtual archives. It's a common issue with Android devices - the tech savvy have lots of opportunities for tweaking and twiddling, but the average user can be befuddled.<br /><br />When using the laptop accessory it's easy to forget you're actually using a phone - so it is particularly annoying when it suffers from a noticeable amount of lag in some programs. <br /><br />For example, the preloaded QuickOffice should be available to use with the lapdock for working on spreadsheets or documents, but it's really slow to get going. There is no cursor, so it's hard to see where you are - and there's about two seconds of lag between input and action, which makes the typing experience rather frustrating. Plus, the touchpad is a bit too big and means we kept swiping accidentally and sending our invisible cursor off into the middle of the text.<br /><br />If you can get to grips with it, though, it's a really useful tool for typing texts and email replies - they pop up as notifications, which can be navigated to. If an incoming call arrives, it s possible to take it using the mic and speakerphone on the dock.<br /><br />Films and internet<br />Surfing the net proved a smooth experience on the handset and lapdock - the browser's desktop-like features showed up well on the 11.6in display. Take the phone out of the lapdock and it can ‘remember' what programs you were using, so you can keep browsing on the handset.<br /><br />The included video player is able to play most common file types, including DivX/Xvid, which is used for most of the compressed video online. It is also possible to playback in high-def, although we found we were unable to view much of the 720p content we downloaded, as it was in MKV format, which the player doesn't support. On the laptop dock, video appeared pretty smooth but we found the colours to be disappointing and less vibrant than we knew they should be, because of the display's 1366×768 pixel resolution.<br /><br />Thanks to the presence of an HDMI port, it is possible to connect the Atrix up to a monitor or HDTV to see your content in a larger, more vibrant form. It is possible to shoot still images and record HD movies using the five-megapixel snapper, though we found both were somewhat overexposed. However, the phone is more than adequate for most spontaneous Facebook-friendly pictures you want to take. The camera also sports a dual flash, so low-light images come out okay.<br /><br />The verdict<br />Motorola's Atrix proves itself a powerful smartphone, but will be outbeaten by the superphones due out later in the summer. Its USP is the ability to use it as a laptop, but while this is a great idea, it is disappointing in its execution. If you just consider it as a phone, it still comes up short because of those software freezes. And it just can't deliver when it comes to acting as a computer. This is a good idea, and eventually a phone that achieves the phone/computer double-whammy will no doubt appear at some stage, but for now, we'd suggest you simply use a Bluetooth keyboard with your existing phone.<br /><br />

However, you have to bear in mind that it is in reality two handsets in one. Yes, the Pro-Talk actually has a pair of SIM card slots, which allow you to both receive and call on two different phone numbers - great if you want to keep work and private calls separately, (or indeed if you're having an affair - but we'll leave that one with you).<br /><br />The handset can also be programmed to have a different ringtone for each number - so you know whether to answer your phone with your ‘professional' voice or a more casual, friendly tone. It's a simple facility to use - all you do is just dial the number you want and when you press send, the phone will ask if you want to call from SIM 1 or 2. You also get to view two different signal strength meters on the display.<br /><br />To dial you have a choice - either use the virtual keyboard on screen, or the conventional one. We're not sure there is any benefit from this as the virtual one is not that easy to use. Indeed, the real keyboard isn't that great either - we found the keys were too small and pretty close together. Not easy if you have bigger hands.<br /><br />Resistive screen<br />There are other touch-screen tough-phones, such as the Motorola Defy, which runs on Android and is certainly a smarter phone than this one, but it doesn't offer as much in the way of protection. Also the Pro-Talk has a resistive screen. Now, usually, we would say that a capacitive display is far more preferable, but should you be using your phone outside, and are wearing gloves, or it's raining, then a resistive screen is a far better option.<br />Texting<br />When we tried texting, we found that using the miniscule onscreen QWERTY keypad was just too fiddly. We couldn't hit the key we wanted, even when using the edge of our pinkie fingernail. Another disappointment is the handwriting recognition. Write on the screen and you'll see the handset converts it to text - a great idea until you come to realise that you have to correct pretty much every word.<br /><br />As with most other rugged handsets, the battery compartment sits behind a door that is held in place by lugs that must be turned to undo the door. It's another thing we found rather fiddly, as if the lugs aren't in exactly the right place, it simply won't shut.<br /><br />Look in the menu options and you'll find Business Zone - oddly, this is where you go to access the handset's games. Mind you, there's only Magic Sushi and Tetris to choose from so we don't think you'll be heading there very often. We found the menu system to be far from intuitive - there is GPS, for example, but you'll discover it hidden away in Organiser. There is no mapping facility included so you'll just find out your latitude and longitude.<br /><br />The handset can also be used as a two-way radio, which is handy if you want to communicate with someone else (for free) on the building site or in another outdoor environment.<br /><br />We must also point out that the phone doesn't offer 3G, so if you want to surf the net you'll be using GPRS, so don't expect it to be quick.<br /><br />It's a wind-up<br /><br />A handy feature is the wind-up charger, which means you can give it a wind to get a bit of power if your phone is flat. You need to do rather a lot of winding to get a little bit of talking, but it's useful if you're desperate.<br /><br />We do like the fact that you can suppress background noise - useful for noisy places such as building sites - you'll find this facility under Organiser.<br /><br />There is a camera on board ( two-megapixels), so it's not hugely impressive but it's good enough for taking some basic images. You can also use the flash as a torch when you're not taking pictures.<br />JCB produced an earlier tough-phone, which was called the Tradesman. It wasn't as smart as the Pro-Talk, but it was able to float, which was a nifty feature that the Pro-Talk lacks.<br />Our conclusion<br /><br />If you work in a tough environment and need a reasonably priced smartphone, this is a good choice. If you're just a bit clumsy, and want a more capable handset you'd be better off choosing Motorola's Defy. However, we rather like the building-site cred that the familiar JCB black and yellow body gives you.<br /><br />
